Ole's Puka is situated on the west coast of the island of Hawai'i, in
the desert of Ka'u. It is located within the Hawai'i Ocean View Estates subdivision,
about 45 miles south of Kailua-Kona and about 30 miles north of South
Point. The puka contains a large pit with native Peperomia in the entrance. Large trunk passage
extends to either side of the pit. The lot surrounding the
puka has some ohi'a trees and an abundance of native species bush.
In recent
years the puka has become a focal point of illegal dumping. The
Cave Conservancy of Hawai'i has recently cleaned up this cave and restored
it to its original condition. With a grant from the National Speleological
Society, the CCH has also constructed an educational kiosk on the site.
This is used to teach local residents about the impacts that they
can have on the underlying cave system.
